Fatigue Science’s work with the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks has been referenced in Arianna Huffington’s new bestseller Thrive: The third metric to redefining success and creating a life of well-being, wisdom, and wonder.
While addressing the general disregard for sleep found in the business world, she looks at the quantifiable results professional sports teams are finding in their own efforts to improve performance with sleep:
“The fundamental flaw at the heart of our misguided definition of success is the belief that overworking is the route to high performance and exceptional results.” Arianna writes, “One easy way to see the folly of this belief is to look at the world of sports, where performance is objectively quantified and measurable…Top athletes are all about results. And because sports are endlessly quantifiable, it’s often very easy to measure just what does and doesn’t work.”
Arianna continues on to introduce Fatigue Science technology as one of the new practices being applied in the sports world, quoting our own Pat Byrne who had spoken to NBA.com last year about our work with the Mavericks: “If a player is sleeping six hours a night and says ‘I feel fine’, we can actually say, ‘We can make your reaction time better if you’re sleeping eight hours’. We can prove it to you, we can show you.”
Arianna’s extensive chapter on ‘Well-Being’ which focuses intensely on sleep and the professional and health benefits of prioritizing it is chock full of stories and research. We are pretty thrilled to have such a public ‘sleep evangelist’ championing the cause of better sleep for better success in life, work and health.
