Fatigue Science Team at “Boots on the Ground” Event

Fatigue Science delighted to contribute to Balfour Beatty’s ‘Zero Harm’ initiative through participation in ‘Boots on the Ground’ event held near Folkstone, Kent, UK.

Balfour Beatty is on a mission to “Zero Harm”, which for this multinational infrastructure group, means “no injury, ill health, or incident caused by its work activities.” Part of this initiative includes hosting events to help raise awareness of health and safety issues, called “Boots on the Ground”. These events help set the principles of teamwork, that safety is part of the job, and risk awareness is the responsibility of every worker. Fatigue Science was appreciative to be able to participate in one of this year’s ‘Boots on the Ground’ initiatives. In attendance was Fatigue Science’s CEO, Andrew Morden, SVP Sales and Marketing, David Trotter, and Senior Customer Success Manager, Gillian Taylor.

Fatigue Science demonstrated how fatigue is correlated to alertness on the job – a critical component to reacting to changing conditions on work sites, and therefore, helping preventing accidents. When workers wear Fatigue Science’s Readiband™, they are able to assess their cognitive fitness for their entire shift through a quick check on their smartphone app. By predicting alertness scores in advance of a shift, workers can choose to stack critical tasks at times where there is less fatigue risk, or consult a supervisor about potential risks. This ability to predict fatigue and prevent risks is an integral part of upholding Balfour Beatty’s four ‘Golden Rules’ of workplace safety: Be fit for work; Always receive a briefing before starting work; Report all unsafe events and conditions; Stop work if anything changes.

Representation at “Boots on the Ground” is part of growing awareness of fatigue risk in the workplace. “It was wonderful being able to speak directly with Readiband™ users and seeing the impact of fatigue monitoring on a worker’s day-to-day”, says David Trotter, “I am excited about the future, and how Fatigue Science can continue to support an organization so committed to heath and safety.”
